Chartwell International School

Chartwell International School

In Year 7, pupils make the transition from Primary School to Secondary School. The Secondary School encompasses Key Stage 3 which covers pupils aged 11-14 (Years 7-9), Key Stage 4 which covers pupils 14-16 (Years 10 and 11) and AS and A levels for students aged 16 to 18 (Years 12 and 13).

In Key Stage 3, all students follow a course involving a wide range of subjects designed to stretch and challenge every individual, providing everyone with the opportunity to discover and examine their own particular interests and talents.

A wide range of teaching styles are used to meet the differing demands of each subject – an emphasis is put on problem-solving, team work and the development of independent study.

All students study the following subjectsEnglish language, English literature, Maths, Science, History, Geography, French, Serbian ( as First Language/Second Language), PE, Music, ART and ICT.

Students can also chose to have an additional foreign language ( Chinese, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian) or to have additional music lessons – playing an instrument or singing in choir, or they can join the yearbook team.

Towards the latter half of Year 9, students select the subjects for their IGCSE examination courses for the next two years – this selection process is based upon a wide range of guidance and advice and is undertaken in close consultation with parents and staff.

Years 10 and 11 form the final two years of compulsory schooling, during which the majority of students will follow IGCSE courses in 8 or 9 subjects. These subjects are selected by the students in close consultation with parents and staff. Students are encouraged to maintain a broad and balanced curriculum by building upon a core of the following subjects: English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Combined Science, Geography, History, Information and Communication Technology, Modern Foreign Language, Business Studies, Sociology, Drama, Music.

The school will aim that all students also have at least one hour of physical education per week as students’ health is just as important as their academic development.

Years 12 and 13 – Advanced/AS level (ages 17 and 18)  Cambridge International A/AS Levels are internationally benchmarked qualifications providing excellent preparation for university education. They are part of the Cambridge Advanced stage.
