Using a real stethoscope and the stethoscopes we made in class using paper towel rolls and funnels, we listened to each other's heartbeat.
By placing the funnel stethoscope flat on the left side of the chest, we listened and counted the beats for 15 seconds. Multiplying that number by 4 got us our resting heart rate in 'beats per minute' (bpm). Next, we exercised by running on the spot for one minute. We then listened and counted our heart beats for 10 seconds and multiplied them by 6. These results literally 'flew off' our workbook bar charts. We learnt first hand how much our heart rate changes straight after exercising and why that change is important for our hearts and bodies.
