This week in English, students enjoyed a read-aloud novel study of A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket.
Every time we completed our read-aloud of the day, there was a collective, “Nooooo!” as the students were left yearning to listen to more. Students were thrilled with a surprise read-aloud during library! Afterwards, they shared their literature circle roles, which included: Discussion Director, Stellar Summarizer, Literary Illuminator, Adventuring Artist, Connector and Vocabulary Enricher.
Students loved this suspense novel so much! Not only did they enjoy it, but they also applied critical thinking within their analysis of it. One of the favorite activities was Character Sketches: describing a character from the novel to a partner who then sketches the character and guesses who it is. This was an authentic learning opportunity where students identify diverse traits needed to develop unique story characters. They will apply these skills in their own story writing!
