In February, Year 5 and 6 students had the chance to visit a pharmacy in New Belgrade.
Entitled The Little Pharmacist, the event allowed students to see what life is like working in a pharmacy, the wide range of responsibilities a pharmacist has when dealing with customers, as well as finding the right medication, the importance of communicating well with others to ensure nothing is lost in translation, and — most importantly — the positive significance of respecting each other in the workplace.
Students took turns acting as pharmacists and customers. Customers were tasked with ordering products, while pharmacists were tasked with accepting orders, finding the right product, and then giving the customer the correct item — but not before the customer paid the right amount with Monopoly-like cash. It was crucial for students, in the role of pharmacists, to give their customers the correct price and not to overcharge or undercharge them. Maths comes in handy outside of school, after all, along with positive social skills and respect!
Overall, the event demonstrated to students — even if only briefly — what life is like working in an adult job and the consequences of doing a job well or poorly. Thankfully, students understood all tasks well and, as a result, had a spiffing time!
